It seems that in the end it was client's fault. Maybe pine and mutt use some common imap library, because they behaved in the same way. If pine/mutt is run under same username as used in imap login, browsing and creating folders work. If not, problems are encountered. Also if username is configured in .muttrc, everything works. But if username is only entered when pine/mutt asks it during startup, things dont work. I'm sorry for blaming cyrus.
