I'm not expecting anyone to be particularly motivated. I admit that much of this post was more venting than productive. But it's really frustrating to have something almost but not quite working for weeks. Below I've (re)posted some specifics on what I was seeing. In addition to this, I was finding the very similar log entries when I was asked to authenticate an 'ldapadd' command. similar in that the problem was sasldb not being able to authenticate. Interesting in that I have nothing left to indicate that sasldb should be used for authentication. I would call this something of a "ghost". Given that I might have done something to my SuSE 8.2 Professional installation, I may have to start over again. However, I was able to determine from another person on the SuSE mailing list that what I entered for the "not working" segment should work as that is his S.O.P. and what did work shouldn't. For what it's worth, it would probably be better to just list what I'm doing and seeing. CONFIGURATION /etc/imapd.conf: sasl_pwcheck_method: auxprop sasl_auxprop_plugin: sasldb postconf -n | grep myhostname myhostname = mcgee.tacocat.net mcgee:~ # ls -l /etc/sasldb2 -rw-r----- 1 root mail 12288 2003-10-27 07:07 /etc/sasldb2 I am trying to use the authentication with a domain matching my $myhostname.
