Outlook XP:
Go to you IMAP mailbox, select menu "Edit"/"Purge Deleted Messages".

Okay, general client question (sorry for being off topic). How do you do 
this in Outlook 2000?

I have opened the client, and I have selected the empty deleted folder on 
exit. However, items are not removed from the mailbox.
