Doh! Sorry Gary, I completely missed this in your original post.
I think that Larry's idea of using AUTHENTICATE with the authorization
id set to the user whose mailbox you're populating is the way to go.
There are two easy ways to get access to the PLAIN mechanism:
1. Use an encrypted connection, either via imaps or STARTTLS.
2. Add '-p 2' to the command line for your imap service in cyrus.conf.
