I don't know if it would even relate at all, but I noticed on the openssl list some comments about /dev/random blocking. I got the impression that using prngd might actually be better(?) faster(?) than using /dev/random on some systems. Openssl 0.9.7 when released will even be able to automatically find the prngd socket on most systems. I guess you could try that route and see how it goes.
