ulimit -c was set to 0 which is why I wasn't getting any core dumps. 
Once I realized this I set ulimit -c unlimited and got a core file.

I posted the results of a gdb bt to this thread previously. Ken came up with
a patched to imapd.c which was needed in my case for doing auth with sasl
libs on Linux. 

My posts seem to be getting to the list rather slowly today so most of this
should be obvious by now.
