A few things I can think of:
Did you compile sasl from the sasl-1.5.24 tarball @ cmu?
Which user are you logged in as when you run saslpasswd?
Check the permissions on /etc/sasldb. It should be readable and writable by
the user cyrus.
Generic failure is normal (I think) for the first user created in sasldb.

Subject: Re: How I got Cyrus 2.0.12 up on RedHat 7.0
I was read your post in the archives and I must be missing something, wrong
beer?????
I follow steps 1-5 on a clean Redhat 7.0 and I still recive the genric
failure when I try to create a user using saslpasswd. Running
sasldblistusers only shows Cram and Digest, no Plain. If I try to run
saslpasswd again it just hangs. I have read the documentation and can not
find anything special that has to be done to support Plain. I have had this
problem on 2 clean Redhat 6.2 installs and 2 Redhat 7.0 installs. What am I
missing, or what document should I be reading?
Thanks
