For us it hasn't really been a problem. We seem to be somewhat
unique in this regard, but we do not have the main campus MTA router
on the Cyrus server. In fact, that's why I personally was so
interested in LMTP: it allowed separating the mail queue management
from the Cyrus message store management. We then have a private
network that joints the main MTA router, the Cyrus system(s)
(currently only one), and the list serve "exploder". The MTA
router, the list serve box, and our USENET box can all deliver mail
directly into the message store via LMTP.

the IMAP Aggregator into this environment once it becomes more
complete, that is assuming the entire campus hasn't been forced into
the Microsoft Exchange regime. So much for all that work.

Anyway, before I slipped into cynicism, with all the routing our MTA
has to do, we've already got virtual table entries for all valid
addresses. Hence, the business of the alias expansion is taken care
of by that. Eventually, I was planning on moving all of that
virtual table stuff into LDAP (been saying this for a while now),
but we'll see how Exchange impacts those plans.
