Have you checked the following files for proper configuration entries:
1) Cyrus.conf (on RH it is in /usr/lib/sasl).
2) imapd.conf (on RH it is in /etc).
3) In case you are using pam, check imap (on RH in /etc/pam.d)
Also make sure your cyrus user account has read access to /etc/shadow.

Subject: Cyrus/SASL Authentication
I am not sure I understand how this works. I compiled Cyrus imapd 1.6.24
with --with-auth=unix, and SASL 1.5.24 with various different methods of
authentication, passwd, shadow, plain. System is a Cobalt RAQ4i
(essentially,
Red Hat 6.0).
Imap users cannot be authenticated under any of these configs from
/etc/passwd
and /etc/shadow. It seems I *must* enter passwords using saslpasswd.
I'd really rather just use normal UNIX authentication here.
Users are signing up for a PHP/MySQL portal that runs on our system, with
the ability to set their own passwords. We also offer IMP-based e-mail that
uses Cyrus impad. I can cut and paste encrypted password from the
underlying
MySQL database for the portal into /etc/shadow, but don't know how/if I can
get them into the sasldb.
Can sometone explain the relationships involved here, and suggest
configure options for both Cyrus imapd and SASL that will allow
normal UNIX authentication? Thank you.
