The arrangement of the GUI elements is realized by the underlying wxWidgets 
lib, which on Ubuntu is implemented as a wrapper around GTK.
Because nobody else has reported such problems I assume it is related to your 
specific wxWidgets version, your GTK version and/or your windows manager.
As long as nobody else can reproduce the issue and can shed some light on the 
circumstance for this behavior, there is nothing we can do.

Title:
  overlapping elements in GUI

Status in Hugin:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  In nearly every window the gui elements are overlapping and so parts of them 
not readable.
  I'm on Kubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) and i'm using Hugin 2014.0.0 (installed a 
few days ago).
