Oh, not in the least! I've tried a few configure tests for regex (a few
have been written by others too) and it's just not easy.

Ugh. As I said, I picked the glibc versions for the reason that they're
already well-maintained. We had a strptime code, but there are certainly
problems with it. (Keep in mind the Y2K bugs that cropped up with the
original timegm code.) I would prefer that we wouldn't need to maintain
things like strptime or regex!

So I'm back to my original question--does FreeBSD (or the like) have
strptime in its libc? This may be more usable for Joe than the glibc
version.
