I don't see that anyone has gotten back to you--sorry if that's true. Timeouts can certainly time out only on certain searches. The amount of time for a search depends on how many results need to be scored, retrieved, etc. So very common words in your search are more likely to cause timeouts. Common words honestly don't add much "information value" to a search, so one workaround is to add some of the more common words on your site to the "bad words" file. http://www.htdig.org/attrs.html#bad_word_list You may also find that searches from the 3.2 betas are faster for you.
