That's the idea.
Add closing elements to all tags, so <p> needs a </p> and we use <br /> and <hr /> and <input foo="" /> etc...
XHTML should work fine in older browsers, as they just see another attribute they don't understand and ignore it. There's a lot of XHTML compliant sites out there, and they all work.
I'd want to see htdig move forward to using XHTML and have instructions for people who might need to compile it to use HTML instead.
