I'm running htsearch from the web interface with odd results. About 1 of every 5 times it produces results that indicate the indexing process, including htdig and htfuzzy, is complete. That is, it runs as you would expect it to. I get the right results and all is grand. When you say "4 of 5 times" are you referring to 5 consecutive searches in a short period of time? Or searches conducted after 5 indexing runs? If the latter, it sounds like something is interrupting the dig. As for the former, how are you performing the dig? Is there any chance that rundig is looping and continuously rebuilding the databases? Aside from that, the only thing that comes to mind is an intermittent drive problem (or network problem if you are using something like NFS).
The other 4 of 5 times I get this error:
"Unable to read word database file '/var/lib/htdig/db.words.db'
Did you run htdig?"
