Hi, I have set up a HP Colour Laserjet 2840 multi-function using HPLIP on Fedora Core 7, and I can't get some of the SANE programs to recognise it, and I can't connect to it via some of the HLIP utilities. The device is connected to the network using the internal Jetdirect card in this printer. Basic printing and command line scanning works fine, however.
Also note I'm using hplip v 1.7.4a rather than the latest version because that is what came with FC7. I don't know if this is a SANE issue or a HPLIP issue but the SANE folks appear to be redirecting people with HP scanning issues here, and the errors I'm getting come from the HPLIP utilities. Firstly I set up networked printing and faxing using hp-setup. That seemed to autodetect my printer fine, and set up a device URI hp:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_2840?ip=192.168.1.21 I then installed this printer in CUPS, everything worked fine and I could print a test page, print documents, etc. I then checked that hpiod and hpssd were running, restarted them, etc. I can now run scanimage -L and it reports: device `hpaio:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_2840?ip=192.168.1.21' is a Hewlett-Packard HP_Color_LaserJet_2840 all-in-one I can also run scanimage from the command line, and it scans fine. Batch scanning works fine as well, e.g. /usr/bin/scanimage --mode Color --resolution 300 -y 296 --batch="FILE=%04d.pnm" --batch-count=2 However xsane reports: Failed to open device 'hpaio:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_2840?ip=192.168.1.21': Error during device I/O. At the same time a message appears in /var/log/messages saying: hpiod: unable to read JetDirectDevice::DeviceID If I try running gimp, kooka, or any other graphical application it tells me that there are no scanners set up. If I try /usr/bin/hp-makeuri 192.168.1.21 It reports: error: Device not found and in the syslog the following error appears: hpiod: unable to read System::MakeUriFromIP python: hp-makeuri[3630] error: Device not found I've tried running sane-troubleshoot and it refers me to sane-hpaio (as do a few other things in the SANE manual) which is not found on my system nor in any of the hplip packages I've found. In more detail, sane-troubleshoot reports: ERROR: I tried to call sane_open but it returned the following error message: "Error during device I/O". Please check the "sane-hpaio" manual page. Maybe you need to fine-tune some settings. Also, at the time this happens, the "unable to read JetDirectDevice::DeviceID" message appears in the syslog.
