Is your regular user a member of the group "scanner"?  To find out,
type "groups", without quotes, at a command line prompt.  If the
"scanner" group is not among them, add the user (has to be done as
root) with "usermod -G <comma separated group list> username".  Note
that _all_ groups need to listed, as this is an absolute list, not an
append operation.  The existing groups can be cut/pasted/grepped from
the groups list already derived.

A safer option is to use whatever GUI method you have for user/group
manipulation.
