Thanks for the response, in the meantime I have found this problem is my
own futzing.
I am seeing the hp-chcck error because I tried installing the latest
Sourceforge hplip 2.7.7, then I failed to completely uninstall 2.7.7 and
I reinstalled the Ubuntu hplip package 1.7.3
I got the hplip Ubuntu source package and there is no hp-check program
in it. So the hp-check is a symbolic link to a python script. HP-check
is junk left over from the abandoned source code install. And all the
guts that python script calls do not exist in 1.7.3, it seems to me.
I am presently looking at the Ubuntu package of hplip source code and
trying to see if I can create an new package using 2.7.7 source.
The inner peanut of a problem, buried way down inside all this is I
can't get my really old DeskJet 1120C with a parallel port to print jpeg
photos on 11x17" and custom dimension large pages.
