With "plain printing" I mean printing without any stuff like "Services/Status", "Copy", "Scan", "Photo", "Fax" or whatever else a modern printer or all-in-one device can do. With "plain printing" I do not mean printing plain text. By the way: >From the printing system's point of view the CUPS testpage is simpler to print than plain text. The reason is that the CUPS testpage is a perfect PostScript document which is in full compliance to the PostScript and DSC specifications so that there is no problem to process it by the filters of the printing system. In contrast plain text must be first converted to PostScript (by the CUPS texttops filter) but plain text is not as simple as it seems (except there are only printable 7-bit ASCII characters) e.g. plain text can appear in whatever langauage encoding but all what can be done is to guess the encoding or it can contain whatever funny control characters.
