Peger,

The HPLIP team does not create any RPM, Deb, or any other distro specific
packages. We leave this up to the distro. You may want to post this to a
fedora forum for additional review..

Thanks for the feedback though!

Fedora7 and SourceForge HPLIP project representatives,

Before grousing, I would like to thank both your organizations for the
excellent work you are doing in making computing an enjoyable
experience. It's made all the pain in getting a CS degree worth it, or
at least most of it.

I think the listed problems may be of widespread interest because they
affect the legions of us who are using HP multifunction
scanner/printers. I speculate that fixing these issues may be somewhat
trivial.

My hplip RPM installation gripes, which may label me indelibly as a
relative newbie, are as follows in order of importance:

*1) After the hplip RPM had installed itself, the "show" flag was not
set in the Application Menu* and I only found the "HP Device Manager"
GUI while adjusting personal look and feel settings for the Main Menu.
Scanner functions and printer functions were already implemented, but
because I was unable to access the refresh functionality by using the
Printer utility (as far I could see), I kept losing contact with the
printer and had to reboot to actually print in some cases. It was a
definite that I would loose printing if I had used the scanner utility
prior in the session. (See suggestion 4 below).

*2) the hplip RPM was difficult to find* and I only found it while
looking at the all available packages feature in Yumex (gotta love that
Yumex!).

3) last, and definitely least, *the version of hplip that was available
for Fedora7 was not the latest version*; although that may have changed
since I installed it a week back. I tried installing it manually, but
encountered dependency issues which I was ultimately able to reduce from
7 to 4, but it might as well have been a million.

4) Just a suggestion: *the hplip application has a "refresh" feature* to
keep contact with the printer/scanner *which I speculate might be
possible to graft into the hpjis utililty*. If that were true, it would
be a big improvement. I apologize in advance if it's already there and I
missed it. I appreciate that, given how new Fedora7 is, and how
frequently the hplip is updated, both organizations are doing an
excellent job of keeping current.

_Not having the latest version is not a problem_ for me personally,
because my cheap old scanner/printer is now beautifully supported, thank
you very much, sirs. Likewise, _improving the hpjis utility would not
benefit me either_ as /*I am enjoying the ecstasy of a fully functional
hplip installation*/, than you again.

/Your somewhat humble servant/,
Peter Ford Livingston
