Mike,
did you try this? If you don't have your network setup correctly then hpssd
will fail..
Run
'cat /etc/hosts'
If you do not see the line:
127.0.0.1 localhost
add it. then restart your network:
su
/etc/init.d/networking restart
and then hplip as per above.

after installing hplip from sourceforge (build and make without errors or
warnings, manual install),
whne I try to run 'hp-setup', I get:
error: unable to connect to HPIOD
Ideas anyone?
