For me it is o.k. if "write out a file" is optionally via a command
line parameter.

I asked a colleague who told me that "officially" an application
should read the TERM environment variable and produce appropriate
output.
It seems hp-check doesn't care about the TERM environment
variable (after "export TERM=dumb" I still get the ESC codes)
but this "bug" doesn't matter because he told me that it is better
(i.e. more reliable and easier to use) to provide a command line
parameter to switch the terminal ESC codes on and off.
