Hi,

The other day I throwed away my old OfficeJet Pro 1150c and bought me a brand
new Photosmart C5180 and connected it with an ethernet cable to my
home-network. My DHCP server found the new device and assigned it an
ip-address immediately, then I started up HPLIP and added a new network
printer. HPLIP found it and configured it without any problem. It just
worked "out of the box"!

At first I wasn't able to scan, Koka didn't find any scanner. Since I use
openSUSE 10.2 I went to yast - add scanner but no scanner was found
automatically. I had to add it manually and select the correct driver, when
that was done yast found my device at the network and scanning now works
great!

Why this post? First of all I would just like to inform anyone that is about
to by a HP Photosmart C5100 series that everything works great with HPLIP.
In openSUSE 10.2 you first have to activate and start the hplip service in
Yast - System - Edit runlevels, I use hplip 1.6.10 which is shipped with
openSUSE 10.2, even though it was installed automatically during installation
the service is not activated by default.

Then I would like to know what will happen sooner or later when my DHCP server
decides to assign the device another ip-adress? If I am not misstaken the
Windows drivers that comes with the product will find the printer anyway but
what about HPLIP? Will HPLIP find my printer when it's ip address is changed?
Is it recommended or not to assign the printer a static ip?
