I'm using typewriter paper, but that's not the problem. I asked a friend
to print the file for me. He used a newer HP (I don't know the exact
name) in Windows and printed on typewriter paper, too. His print looks
much better.

I'm using Gimp for printing, but that's also not the problem. If I just
use xsane to copy the scan directly to the printer (xsane will convert
to Postscript and send the result to CUPS), then the result is also too
dark.

I don't know anything about printout modes. Where can I set this?

CU
