Just wanted to thank you for your help, but I figured it out myself. All I had to do was a simple sudo modprobe ppdev and then everything was back to normal; I also added ppdev to /etc/modules so I wouldnt have to load ppdev after each restart. HP PSC-500 is automagically detected now as a printer; as it was greyed out before. Hope this helps others. Thanks again!!
