I used Apple mail and printed a variety of messages (b & w and
colored text) under various quality settings (it prints via Cups). I
also printed a few Word documents (that contained images) using
NeoOffice. I don't use the Gimp on OSX (since it requires X11) - I
use the derivative work Seashore, and it printed very high quality
images on plain paper.

Under the highest quality setting, the Gutenprint output was far
superior (subjective !). I make that comparison based on text only,
as for me that is far more important, and I also figured that if I
obtained better output (especially using small font sizes), the image
printing would be bette as well. (In order to really test imaging I
think you probably need to use glossy photo paper).

The only drawback to Gutenprint is the myriad of output options. I
think it is designed for higher quality printing than I really need.
Luckily the most common are on the first page, and I have only had to
deal with those.
