What does "begin a session" mean?
Do you boot your computer anew or do you just log anew
in or do you start up your desktop anew (and which
desktop KDE or Gnome)?

As far as I see this may have nothing to do with the HPLIP
driver software.

It would be of interest to know what exactly you mean with
"didn't react at all".
What does the usual CUPS command about the queue state
tell you?
In particular what shows
lpstat -p
and
lpstat -a
and
lpstat -v
