Hi, all. I'm an occasional mapper, mostly just fixing hiking trails and dirt roads, but I've stumbled on a problem trying to tag some Ancestral Puebloan ruins in New Mexico, and I can't figure out how to tag them correctly.
For instance, Tyoyoni Pueblo #475976060 in Bandelier NM (which also include a bogus "Hamlet" designation, which I suspect I should replace with something like Tourism=attraction). Or the little ruins #2468238120 in downtown Los Alamos. They're marked as Ruins, but the field for Historic Civilization is empty. The allowed list is fairly limited, with no North American options at all, unless that's what "prehispanic" is supposed to be (prehispanic isn't mentioned in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:historic:civilization). Tags like prehistoric, bronze-age, etc. don't seem appropriate, and that wiki page doesn't mention North America at all. On the other hand, at Chaco, ruins are "Archaelogical Site" instead of "Ruins". That has a similar but different "Historic Civilization" tag, which excludes "prehispanic" but adds one clearly North American civilization, "cahokian" (not mentioned on the historic:civilization wiki page either). When should "Archaelogical Site" be used vs "Ruins"? Is there a reason the "Historic Civilization" lists are different for the two, and are the meanings of the values documented anywhere? Is there any chance of getting some North American civilizations added to the list? Or is there some tag where the cultural name could be added as a free-form fill-in-the-blank tag instead of needing to choose from a list? Thanks for any guidance. ...Akkana _______________________________________________ Historic mailing list [email protected] https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/historic
