It was a previous installation using Synaptic Package Manager.  Have now 
removed it,
rebuilt the development version.

But now I get the following problem:

x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc: error: MiscXS.c: No such file or directory
x86_64-linux-gnu-gcc: fatal error: no input files
compilation terminated.
