We have no delusion that Heka will replace every tool with which it has functional overlap. We've worked (and will continue to work) hard to ensure that Heka provides ways to interoperate with a variety of other popular and useful tools. Simon's other reply in this thread is a great example of how one can use Heka alongside collectd, if that's your jam.

That being said, Heka has a different, larger scope than either collectd or logstash-forwarder. Heka is about collection, but it's not *just* about collection. Heka is about shipping, but it's not *just* about shipping. Heka is ultimately about analytics and stream processing, its real strengths lie in what you can *do* with the collected data while it's in transit.

Will Heka ever provide as rich a set of data collection features as collectd? Probably not. But there will almost certainly be cases where someone starts out using collectd to feed Heka, but over time realizes that Heka itself can take over the gathering that collectd was doing. This might reduce operational complexity, which we'd count as a win. If we happen to replace statsd as well, there's another win. Rinse, lather, repeat.

But if existing tools are serving you well and there's no benefit to replacing them with Heka, by all means don't replace them. Hopefully Heka will still provide enough value for you to consider trying it out.

Cheers,

I buy the idea that "one agent fits all" could have a huge benefit.

But given that agents like CollectD has a long history and therefore a
large out-of-box functionality set, how can Heka catch up? Most of the
users (like me) just want to enjoy the out-of-box experience. I may want
to write my specific plug-ins, but not whole lot. Any comment on this?

Also, the same question goes to Logstash-forwarder replacement.

Thanks,
