Description:
Note: although this does prevent code execution when a cluster administrator
runs a node rebalancing plan from an untrusted source, it is still an unwise
thing to do, because they won't know the layout of the hdfs cluster. At best:
the plan won't work through lack of information, at worst, it'll fall from
maliciousness.
That said; it'd have been hard (impossible?) to exploit this without a
vulnerable implementation of
org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.server.diskbalancer.planner.Step on the classpath, and
as the only implementation is
{{org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.server.diskbalancer.planner.MoveStep}}, it'd need a
new, vulernable, class somehow getting into the hdfs libraries/dependencies. If
someone were to attempt a malicious supply chain attack, this is not the likely
target.
h3. Summary
The {{NodePlan}} class in Apache Hadoop HDFS DiskBalancer uses
{{@JsonTypeInfo(use = JsonTypeInfo.Id.CLASS)}} annotation, which allows
user-controlled JSON input to specify arbitrary Java class names for
instantiation during deserialization. While current exploitation is partially
mitigated by type constraints and Jackson's internal blocklist, this represents
a dangerous coding pattern that could lead to Remote Code Execution (RCE) if
mitigations are bypassed.
For RCE to take place
* A classname which executes code must already be on the classpath.
* someone must run the {{hdfs nodeplan}} command with a malicious JSON node
plan supplied by someone with lower privileges.

The vulnerability exists in {{NodePlan.java}} where the {{volumeSetPlans}}
field is annotated with Jackson's polymorphic type handling:
