You can also artificially introduce places to use gaurds inside a function:
foo =
let x | 1 > 1 = "uh-oh"
| otherwise = "all is well"
in x
bar =
case () of
_ | 1 > 1 -> "uh-oh"
| otherwise -> "all is well"
