Finished reading your article first thing in the morning, including the 2009 edition. I learned a lot, for example had no idea of variable and color fonts (not a designer, but have used HarfBuzz). The summary of various tools and libraries in the article is very handy. The references to prior art and further readings were also very educational, have to revisit them. Also somewhat frustrated to find out that FontForge is still apparently the best open tool available to hobbyists like myself, despite it's problems.
