Jessie was born with 3.0. I was trying to see if I could install 2.8 in parallel using packages from Wheezy but no cigar.
I also forgot to mention it failed on my desktop about a month ago when I upgraded from Pentoo to Debian but I blew off at time because I was too busy to look into it. But amazing, your suggestion to install python-opengl worked! Awesome - thank you!
