Agreed--I would just use 60", which seems the most prevalent width these days,
cut in half. I know it isn't quite the same as butting the selveges, but I
believe historically people used whatever width they had and adjusted their
construction accordingly--so if it was wider than 30", they might, for example,
cut one side with the gore in one with the body, for instance, and sew the
other gore on as a separate piece. I've seen several interesting variations. It
was all about making best use of the fabric. The selvege edges of 30" fabric
were likely butted because that allowed the maker to eke out every bit of the
width of the fabric.

I think you would be happier adapting wide linen than using cotton muslin.

That's a really off size for modern mills. If you do manage to find 30" linen,
ou might have to pay through the nose for it.
My solution was to do a hand rolled hem where the selvedge edges would be. That
as close enough, for my purposes.

Does anyone knew of a place that sells 30" wide linen? The shift pattern I was
oing to try out was designed for narrower fabric, and the sewing instructions
se the selvages so cutting down a wider piece won't quite work.

(It's no big deal, cotton is just as appropriate and I can find 30" cotton
uslin everywhere. I just like the feel of linen, and since I'm going through
enopause I thought linen might be cooler.)
