Sharon replied - >> Could it be similar to sharkskin? My thoughts FWIW - Sharkskin is known as shagreen and was/is used for knife/sword handles as well as purses and a bunch of other things. Particularly used in Japan and other Asian countries. It's like touching very fine sandpaper and it was used for that purpose by a variety of craftspeople. Not exactly 'soft' Sorry that's not much help but I really don't think it's sharkskin.
