I've looked online extensively for an explanation of the current
best-practice for implementing drawing on a thread separate from the
application main thread. There is this resource for Cairo.

There are many resources explaining that the methods in the above page
are deprecated. There don't seem to be any explaining what should be
done instead.
Pointers welcome.
