Yup. You got what I had in mind. Sorry for the nonsense. I'm happy that at least my confusion triggered an interesting discussion about \c :-} Sooo, both "no-op escape" and "dummy character|escape|whatever" seem good things to me.

between groff(1) and mandoc(1) surprised me too. I, as you, thought that the intuitive behavior would be as [.BR foo bar], and reported it to the mailing list a few months ago.
