I agree.  I used to read the troff-typeset man pages which accompanied Sun
servers as a row of heavy folders and the permuted index was an excellent
resource.  It's not replaced by computer searching, e.g. apropos(1),
because the words of interest were in a column allowing easy scanning
and nearby vertical entries would also be worth a look.
