Lilypond addresses this by keeping documentation for all past released versions on the web, with the version number as part of the URL. Whatever version of Lilypond you have installed, you can find documentation corresponding to that version on their web site. Peter mentioned Lilypond documentation as an inspiration for mom's; perhaps mom could borrow that aspect of it as well. Then (going forward, anyway), "man groff_mom" would give you a URL to exactly the version of the docs that correspond to your specific mom (which is an improvement over Lilypond, which has no man page at all, even a stub pointing to the web site).
