There is a bug in "xpdf" (Debian 3.04-5, bug #879979), so that
standard fonts, like Times, that are not embedded in the PDF-file, are
not found.

  I made a simple test:

.pl 10
Roman
\fIitalic\fR
\f(BIbolditalic\fR
\fBbold\fR

test-groff -Tpdf ... (or use: groff -Tpdf ...).

The "xpdf" did not show any italic font, only the roman ones.

Using an older "xpdf" (Debian 3.03-17b1) showed all four fonts.

Using the postprocessor "gropdf -e" includes the fonts but makes the
output file much bigger.

Using "ps2pdf", "pdfroff" embeds the fonts (or maybe just more
information about them) and increases the size minimally.

"pdffonts" (Debian package "poppler-utils") shows information about
fonts.

"Adobe Acrobat Reader DC" shows the output of "test-groff" correctly.

The names of the fonts are different between output of "gropdf"
("groff") and "ghostscript" ("pdfroff").
