Hi Damian, > English has so many irregularities cause by its roots in Latin and > Greek
And before they came along it was West Germanic, with quite a bit of Norse thrown in. So we've Angles, Saxons, and then those Normans. I think this is one of the reasons the language has become the world's lingua franca in terms of number of different countries that can speak it as a second language; it can adapt and absorb bits it comes into contact with, unlike a Romance language that's stuck being just that. It does cause some duplication, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_words_with_dual_French_and_Anglo-Saxon_variations Also, AIUI, there are phrases that have a word from both, typically in law, so all parties could have understood. -- Cheers, Ralph. https://plus.google.com/+RalphCorderoy
