To close this issue: Bertrand has traced the root cause to a bug in make(1) used by NetBSD. FreeBSD uses this make(1) too so the issue does also occur there. He has also analyzed font warnings during build on NetBSD, these can be avoided by installing package urw-fonts and adding the font path to gs(1), e.g. via (ksh): export GS_LIB=/usr/pkg/share/fonts/urw Many thanx to Bertrand!
