u stands for "basic unit" ... From https://www.gnu.org/software/groff/manual/html_node/Measurements.html
gtroff (like many other programs) requires numeric parameters to specify various measurements. Most numeric parameters9 may have a measurement unit attached. These units are specified as a single character that immediately follows the number or expression. Each of these units are understood, by gtroff, to be a multiple of its basic unit. So, whenever a different measurement unit is specified gtroff converts this into its basic units. This basic unit, represented by a aCu', is a device dependent measurement, which is quite small, ranging from 1/75th to 1/72000th of an inch. The values may be given as fractional numbers; however, fractional basic units are always rounded to integers. : ((the available units explained)) On Fri, Dec 05, 2014 at 11:40:33AM +0000, Anton Shterenlikht wrote: > Thank you, that's what I was looking for. > The only thing I don't understand is > what is "u" in > > lw(\n[w1]u) > > tbl says: > > u,U Move the corresponding column up one half-line. > > which I don't need, but if I remove "u", > the formatting becomes completely broken. > > In my case I get good results with: > > .ie n \{\ > . nr LL 12.5i > . nr c1 1i > . nr c2 0.2i > . nr c3 1i > . nr c4 4i > . nr c5 3i\} > .el \{\ > . nr PS 9 > . nr c1 0.5i > . nr c2 0.01i > . nr c3 0.5i > . nr c4 2.5i > . nr c5 1.5i\} > .TS H > expand, center; > lw(\n[c1]u) lw(\n[c2]u) lw(\n[c3]u) lw(\n[c4]u) lw(\n[c5]u). > > Thanks > > Anton > -- Mike Bianchi Foveal Systems 973 822-2085 mbian...@foveal.com http://www.AutoAuditorium.com http://www.FovealMounts.com
