[Groff] multiple postscript images in one figure?

What is the best way to include several ps files
in one groff figure, e.g. two or more images side by side,
or an array of images, e.g. 4x4:


      image1        image2
        (a)           (b)

Caption: a common caption for both (a) and (b)

**************************************************

      image1   image2    image3
       (a)       (b)       (c)

Caption: a common caption for all (a), (b) and (c)

**************************************************
 
      image1        image2
        (a)           (b)

      image3        image4
        (c)           (d)

Caption: a common caption for all (a)-(d).


I know how to do it with latex, but not with groff.
