The old original documentation for tbl:

Tbl -- A Program to Format Tables
        M. E. Lesk
        1977
        http://www.kohala.com/start/troff/v7man/tbl/tbl.ps

mentions \^ under "Vertically spanned items" on page 5.

The old advice is still the best.
        Read the Book

((Reminisces of when I learned UNIX in the mid-1970's; all the documentation
for UNIX was in incredibly tight but mostly complete man pages and Bell Labs
Memos.))

See also the ^ Format operator on page 2.

Question:
Has the Lesk memo ever been updated for the groff extensions?
