Thank you for the test, Dave.  I  only  tested  this
with  no package and with -mm, which also causes .sp
to be 'ignored' in the beginning  of  the  document.
Sorry for not mentioning it.

I  wonder  why the  initial  position  is  always -1
(instead of 0) and why -- and how -- the mm, ms  and
me packages manage to affect .sp in this way.

Ted  Harding  suggested  that  I  use the zero-width
character, which I did, and so I was able to get rid
of  this  effect  (both the initial offset of -1 and
the omission of .sp) and described it in the  previ-
ous post.
