It's quite not easy for me, but let's try this:
        "If a second argument is given to de (for exemple .de name end),
        the two dots must (can?) be replaced by this argument (.end in
        our example)."

Or this:
        "The optional second argument to de define a replacement (substitution?)
        for the two     dots."
