No, this was not the problem here. Both original eqn and geqn
use the width function to compute the optimum placement for
diacritics, and then generate horizontal moves to place the
glyphs accordingly. The old eqn computation was just wrong,
at least with the PostScript Symbol font.

eqn output is readable, one needs not speculate about it.
