Hi Werner and David, I've tried some of David's test input on xhtml but this also seems to produce erratic results. Sorry for no progress to date on this problem - but I will fix it (for html) once I've flushed the xhtml patches. Unsurprisingly someone else has reported the equation in title bug as well - so the gearing for a fix in this area is becoming quite apparent.
