Groff does not compile under gcc 4.1. You can find more detailed information at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125666 I thought it would be better to place the url instead of copying it, because there is more than one person with the same problem, and the page is dynamic, so you might see any updates of the independent investigation of the bug there...
